Greedy Capitalism be at the heart of the nefarious incandescent light bulb ban? Virgina Postrel raises the possibility:
So the activists offended by the public’s presumed wastefulness took a more direct approach. They joined forces with the big bulb producers, who had an interest in replacing low-margin commodities with high-margin specialty wares.
Holy Screw-the-Prolies Batman… Let me see if I can understand this reasoning… The common, garden variety light bulb is so lo-tech and so cheap to make that the profit margin on them has to be in the order of 1/4 of a percent per bulb, if that. Which is by you used to be able to find light bulbs that were 49 cents a pop.
Why would Obama-loving GE put up with that when by getting a federal ban on incandescents, they would be able make A bigger profit per unit, much much bigger with twisty-bulbs. And as a bonus, would forces the close of an American light bulb factory and outsource twisty bulb production to China. In other words, it’s a perfect compliment to Obama-nomics.
